Case Study: healthcare success story

School Defeats Ransomware With Unitrends “And Not a Penny Paid in Ransom”

The Challenge

Zachary Radke is the IT manager for SantaFe Senior Living. He is charged with managing all aspects of the computing infrastructure from creating a strategic IT vision to operational oversight of the servers, storage and network. Radke reports that prior to Unitrends, the backup and data recovery process was decentralized and manually intensive. “We were manually backing up using Microsoft tools and scripts with task scheduler,” says Radke.

“We wanted to take our backup and recovery to the highest level using consolidated backups and DRaaS (Disaster Recovery-as-a-Service) to ensure future scalability for our remote sites.”

After surveying the market, SantaFe Senior Living selected Unitrends Recovery Series physical backup appliances to consolidate and streamline their healthcare data backups. They also chose the Unitrends Cloud for off-site storage and disaster recovery services. SantaFe HealthCare has mandated that all future cloud operations migrate and consolidate in Microsoft Azure, a process that will be very easy since Unitrends already supports storage, disaster recovery and long-term archiving in the Microsoft cloud. Finally, Unitrends backup and recovery solutions also help SantaFe Senior Living meet HIPAA compliance requirements.

Follow Up

Radke was pleasantly surprised at the ease at which the upgrade took place. Now his team manages all data backup, recovery and disaster planning through the Unitrends interface. “The Unitrends product and support have taken the hassle out of managing multiple backup platforms and methodologies,” says Radke.

“Thankfully, we have not yet had a disaster from which we have had to recover. However, the new Recovery Series appliance made a HIPAA audit very easy, with Unitrends DRaaS and the built-in RPO and RTO reports.”

SantaFe Senior Living has been using Unitrends for their healthcare data backup and HIPAA compliance needs since 2015. The healthcare center has upgraded their Unitrends backup appliance over the years and continues to use Unitrends Cloud for off-site storage, DR and automated reports to meet regulatory requirements.

Unitrends helped us ensure regulatory compliance and meet our DR expectations without the need to massively expand our on-site resources.

"Cost and versatility the application comes in two forms an appliance or Virtual Appliance (aka install as a VM). Each has its advantage and disadvantages."

Kelly T Owner

"Firstly I like that once we got it configured initially, we hardly had to touch it. The backup schedules run regularly and send email reports to confirm they are done. Secondly the user interface is intuitive and easy to use."

Michael W Director of Technology

"I think the best has been the support. The few times we have had issues or questions, we've been able to get someone local to the United States and have no problems with the answers given."
